Bánffy Castle from Bon?ida is an architectonic monument built by the Bánffy family at Bon?ida, in Cluj county.

The construction works began around 1473 and lasted until 1543; the castle also suffered further modifications during the ages, changing its style in accordance with the period. The most prominent architectonic styles found are renaissance and baroque, under the influence of architects such as Agostino Serena and Joseph Emmanuel Fischer von Erlach.

The castle served as a residence for the Bánffy family and also as a fortification.

During the World War II, the residence was severely destroyed by the retreating German army; paintings and valuable objects were stolen and the castle was incendiated. Some say this was an act of revenge due to political reasons.

During the communism regime the castle was left more on less in ruins; one of its wings (which was in a better state after WWII) was used by the C.A.P. (the agricultural cooperative), while the rest of the castle served as a source of raw construction material for the local community. During the '60 the government tried to rehabilitate the monument, but due to lack of founds the operation was soon abandoned.

The castle is currently restored with funds from the "Institute of Historic Building Conservation" (UK), the Hungarian Office for Cultural Heritage Protection and the Romanian Ministry of Culture and Cults. Work is slow though - and at the current pace, it might take decades until the lost glory will be restored.
